GLP-1 vs glp-2 weight loss
You are deciding between two options.
Reference and calculator, not medical advice. Dosing figures below are transcribed from FDA-approved prescribing information and link back to it. Last reviewed August 2026.
For weight loss the comparison has only one side. No GLP-2 medication is approved for weight management, and the one approved GLP-2 analogue is indicated for something close to the opposite problem — helping people with short bowel syndrome absorb more from what they eat.
What GLP-2 actually is
A real hormone from the same precursor protein as GLP-1, with an approved analogue — but for an entirely unrelated condition.
- FDA-approved medication
- Yes
- Approved for
- Short Bowel Syndrome in adults and children aged 1 and over who depend on parenteral support.
- Example
- Gattex (teduglutide), Takeda
- Difference that matters
- Acts on the intestine, not on appetite. It is not a weight-loss drug and is not prescribed as one.
This page describes what each thing is and what it is approved for. It does not compare how well they work, because that is a question for a prescriber with your history in front of them.
That indication is worth reading twice if you arrived here looking for a weight drug. Teduglutide is given to people dependent on intravenous nutrition because their intestine cannot absorb enough. Its purpose is improving absorption, which is not a mechanism anyone is pursuing for weight reduction.
Side-by-side
Structural facts from each product’s prescribing information.
| Product | Active ingredient | Indication | Frequency | Start | Max labelled | Steps to max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zepbound Eli Lilly | Tirzepatide | Weight management | Weekly | 2.5 mg | 15 mg | 6 |
| Wegovy Novo Nordisk | Semaglutide | Weight management | Weekly | 0.25 mg | 2.4 mg | 5 |
| Wegovy tablets Novo Nordisk | Semaglutide (oral) | Weight management | Daily | 1.5 mg | 25 mg | 4 |
The products actually labelled for weight management are above, and all of them act on GLP-1 — two on GLP-1 alone, one on GLP-1 together with GIP.
Common questions
- Could GLP-2 be used off-label for weight?
- Nothing in the labelling supports it and its mechanism points the other way. Off-label use is a prescriber decision, and this is not a scenario the source documents describe.
- Is there a drug targeting both for weight loss?
- No approved product in the US targets GLP-1 and GLP-2 together.

Every dosing figure on this page is transcribed from an FDA-approved label and links back to it. Conversions are arithmetic you can repeat by hand. Nothing here is reviewed by a clinician, and this site does not employ one — which is exactly why what I do publish stays traceable to its source.
