Peptides vs GLP-1

The framing has a problem in it: GLP-1 medications are peptides. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both peptide molecules, so this is not two categories but one category and a subset of it that happens to be FDA-approved.
What "Peptides" actually is
Not a category with a shared meaning. Marketed peptide products range from FDA-approved drugs to compounded preparations to research chemicals sold without approval.

- GLP-1 medications are themselves peptides. The question is not peptide versus GLP-1, but which specific peptide, and whether it is an approved product with a label you can read.
This page describes what each thing is and what it is approved for. It does not compare how well they work, because that is a question for a prescriber with your history in front of them.
What "peptides" means in marketing is narrower and much less defined: a loose set of compounds sold for recovery, body composition or anti-ageing, typically compounded or sold as research chemicals rather than approved as finished drug products. The word groups together things with no shared approval status, no shared evidence base, and no shared safety record.
The check that cuts through it is simple and does not require any pharmacology. Ask whether the specific compound has an FDA-approved label you can read. Semaglutide does. Tirzepatide does. Several peptides marketed for body composition do not, and some — BPC-157 among them — have been placed by the FDA in a category flagged as presenting significant safety risks.

Common questions
- Are peptides safer because they are natural?
- Natural origin says nothing about safety or dose. Insulin is a natural peptide and is lethal at the wrong dose. What matters is whether a product was manufactured to a standard, labelled accurately, and tested.
- How do I check a specific peptide?
- Search it on DailyMed, the FDA label database. If nothing comes back as a finished drug product, no approved label exists — which means no reviewed dosing, no reviewed safety profile, and nothing to verify a seller’s claims against.
- Are compounded GLP-1s "peptides" in this sense?
- A compounded preparation has no label of its own regardless of what it contains. The regulatory position on compounded GLP-1s has narrowed sharply and is covered separately on this site.
